In January we sat down and wrote a list of what we’d like to accomplish this year, one of our goals being to build a pool next to our house. Once we wrote down how to accomplish each goal, we realized that if we wanted a pool for summer we needed to start the swimming…
Arch Rock Trail in Joshua Tree National Park is a great short hike and one of our most frequent hikes in the summer season due to its short length and infinite beauty. The trail itself is a pretty quick 1.2 mile out and back hike and is clearly marked, which allows us to get some…
With the arrival of the June summer heat in the desert around us, we happily refresh The New Moon Spotify playlist with a special feature by a new favorite of ours, Los Angeles-based Anna Ash. Her rendition of the Lucinda Williams’, “Righteously”, plays like a soundtrack to everything cool. Visions of leather jackets, remote dive…
Willow Hole trail in Joshua Tree National Park is unlike any other trail we’ve hiked in the desert. Once you arrive to the turnaround point of the trail—Willow Hole—you’ll be surrounded by lush green vegetation that feels surreal to the area. As one of the few oases to visit in Joshua Tree, it’s also a…
Our May rotation of the New Moon Spotify Playlist features one of our favorite songwriters, San Francisco-based Doncat (Duncan Nielsen). His new single, “Once I Went to Las Vegas”, tells a debaucherous tale of a night spent wandering among the lights of the Las Vegas strip. Nielsen’s bookish lyricism, poised vocal delivery, and layered, chiming guitars blend together…
We’ve been very conscious of the kinds of technology we bring into our home out in the desert, since part of the desert experience we love so much is to slow down and enjoy the process of living, creating, and being. When we do bring technology into our home, it’s something to assist us in…
Our April New Moon Spotify Playlist kicks off with the effortlessly cool “Telephono” by California’s Cape Weather. The band is the collaborative project of Natalie Smith and Eric Jackowitz, the latter being the drummer for Nick Waterhouse (hence the soulful production). The accompanying music video just premiered on NPR, and we can’t get enough of…
We are so excited to have Stella Maria Baer back in town on June 9th to host a watercolor pigment workshop! Join us at the Casita for a full day workshop of creating paint pigments from our surrounding desert environment: sands and cacti. We love the idea that this wild and alien landscape surrounding us…
For our March New Moon Spotify Playlist, we’re featuring Kelly McFarling. Kelly is an Atlanta, GA born, San Francisco-based songwriter. Her work is reflective of transitions, the wilderness, and its navigation. Her most recent album, Water Dog, was featured in Paste and Noisey. The lead single “Records” has received over 3 million streams on Spotify since it’s…
Over the weekend we celebrated two years of full-time desert living. We moved for a variety of reasons—a lower cost of living (though coming from San Francisco most places are), a desire to be more connected to nature, to work remotely as freelance designers, and simply because every time we came to Joshua Tree it…
